Barbie Girls Virtual World

Designing one of the world's first viral virtual worlds. A virtual world that predicted the metaverse.

Colombia & United States · 2006–2008 | Before Roblox. Before Fortnite. Before the metaverse became a buzzword. In 2007 Mattel launched BarbieGirls.com — the fastest growing virtual world in history, reaching 3 million users in its first two months. I designed the virtual rooms, avatar clothing and digital furniture that made up that world — the spatial experience, the customization economy, the visual language of an entire online community built for young girls. At VML, the digital agency behind some of the world's most recognized brands, I was also reinventing the visual identity of Activision's game titles and leading media campaigns for Wonka, Baskin Robbins and Accenture. My first encounter with designing for virtual economies, digital identity and online community — long before those ideas had the names we give them today.
